Cuba Photography Series: Viñales, the EICTV (International Film and Television School of San Antonio de los Baños), and Pueblo Textil.

Viñales Photography Series — Viñales Valley, western Cuba, is a UNESCO World Heritage landscape within Viñales National Park, known for its dramatic mogotes, limestone formations, and extensive cave systems such as Santo Tomás and Palmarito. This unique karst environment combines geological history, rural life, and exceptional biodiversity.

The valley is home to endemic flora and fauna, including Microcycas calocoma (cork palm), the zunzún — the world’s smallest hummingbird — and the tocororo, Cuba’s national bird. This photography series explores the landscapes, ecology, and atmosphere of Viñales through mist, stone, and tropical vegetation.

Mass tourism, unregulated development, water scarcity, and climate change, including increasingly severe cyclones, threaten the landscape that sustains both community and ecology.

Most of the land remains privately or campesino-owned, and although legal protections exist, resources for preservation are limited. The greatest challenge is preserving Viñales without transforming it into a tourist spectacle — protecting its rural identity without reducing it to an empty postcard.

This photography series seeks to capture the entanglement of nature, history, and contemporary life in Viñales — not as something frozen, but as a living landscape that continues to breathe.
