Microscopic photography series of insects using darkfield and reflected light techniques. The images reveal a structural complexity invisible to the naked eye. Antennae, compound eyes, wings, and mandibles emerge as geometric landscapes and alien-like textures. Collaboration with Patricio Angulo.

The mandibles, robust and mobile, cut and shape wax to build honeycombs and manipulate pollen. This structure allows the bee to feed and contribute to pollination, which is essential for many plants and for honey production.

Thanks to this complex structure, bees can perform precise maneuvers, fly in confined spaces, remain stable in air currents, and produce their characteristic buzzing sound by rapidly beating their wings.

This structure is an example of adaptive evolution to protect the colony, although its use is a last resort due to the high cost to the individual bee.

This combination allows bees to navigate with precision, identify flowers, and perform complex flight maneuvers, even in variable light conditions. They can also see in the ultraviolet spectrum, which enables them to detect floral patterns invisible to the human eye.
