About me

I’m Rebeca Saavedra Gironás (Santiago de Chile, 1989), a filmmaker, screenwriter and writer. I hold a degree in Philosophy from the University of Chile and trained in screenwriting, documentary and fiction filmmaking in Chile, Cuba and Spain.

I studied Contemporary Screenwriting at the Chilean Film School, completed a Documentary Filmmaking Workshop at EICTV in Cuba, and earned a Master’s Degree in Documentary Film Direction at ESCAC in Barcelona. I was later awarded a scholarship by the same school to pursue a second Master’s Degree in Fiction Film Direction through its One Year Filmmaking programme. I am also a certified DaVinci Resolve colorist.

My work moves between documentary and fiction, as well as between filmmaking, writing and photography. I am particularly interested in memory, identity, intimacy, the body, family relationships, and the ways personal experiences intersect with broader social realities.

In 2019, I co-directed Traslado, a documentary produced by ESCAC Films about inclusion and intellectual diversity. That same year, I directed El Eterno Retorno, a short film addressing sexual abuse and gender-based violence. I later developed projects such as Adela, bulería por soleá, Yanira, and Somos Voces, a portrait of women shot on 16mm that won the Close:Up Edinburgh Docufest and was selected for the Biennal de Cinema i Dona de València and the Erronka Munduan Festival in San Sebastián.

I have also worked in production, assistant directing, editing and colour grading, and have collaborated on audiovisual and cultural projects in Chile and Spain. Alongside filmmaking, I have developed a career in writing, literature and teaching.

My background in philosophy continues to shape the way I make films. I am interested in observing, asking questions, and staying with things that do not have immediate answers. I see cinema as a way of looking at the world, but also as a way of thinking and relating to it.

I am currently developing new documentary and fiction projects from Zurich.
