Sewell, located at 2,200 metres (7,200 feet) above sea level in the Andes beside the El Teniente copper mine, was founded in 1905 as a mining settlement. It reached its peak between the 1940s and 1960s, when more than 15,000 people lived in a city built on steep slopes, connected by stairways, narrow passageways, and buildings clinging to the mountainside. Today, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sewell stands as a silent witness to Chile's mining history.
